Why replace missing teeth
and why choose implants ?
Few people know it, but there are many consequences to having missing teeth, beyond the aesthetic problems. Indeed, our teeth form a whole within our mouth, which is perfectly balanced. Each of our teeth is held in place by the teeth next to it and by the antagonist teeth (teeth on the opposite jaw). However, when one of them is missing, the neighboring teeth will try to fill the space left by the missing tooth, which leads to gradual dental displacements that will unbalance the smile and increase the risks of oral problems such as cavities and gingivitis.
Also, a decrease in the chewing coefficient is observed since the antagonist tooth no longer has a tooth to rest on when chewing food. In the long run, this tooth may come out of the jawbone and have to be extracted. Over time, the other teeth may wear out prematurely.
Dental implants are small screws that are inserted directly into the jawbone. They are excellent anchors for various types of dentures, including dental bridges. This combination has several advantages for the patient.
The bridge on implants,
an advantageous solution
An implant-supported bridge can replace up to 4 adjacent teeth that are missing, either on the upper or lower jaw. To do this, two implants must first be placed, which, once healed and integrated into the jawbone, can support the bridge. Compared to a traditional bridge, this is an advantageous procedure because it is not necessary to prepare the abutment teeth that support this type of bridge by removing part of the enamel from these teeth. This procedure is therefore less invasive.
Design and installation of the bridge on implants
- The first step is to place the two implants that will serve as anchors for the bridge ;
- It is then essential to wait for the implants to heal and for the osseointegration process to take
place. This takes a few months ;
- Digital impressions of the gums, surrounding teeth and implants are taken. This allows us to design
a bridge that is adapted to the patient’s physiognomy ;
- The bridge is fabricated in the laboratory and then put in place. The dentist makes the final
- The patient regains good chewing ability and the pleasure of smiling.
