The importance of periodontal care
for oral health

Periodontics aims to detect, diagnose, treat and prevent diseases that affect the periodontium. The periodontium is the set of tissues that ensure that our teeth remain firmly anchored in the jawbone: the gums, the alveolar-dental ligament, the dental cementum and the alveolar bone. All of these tissues play an important role, since they allow the roots of the teeth to be firmly anchored to provide us with a stable dentition.

However, whether it is due to poor oral hygiene, lack of professional care, lifestyle habits or a deficient immune system (taking certain medications, stress, malnutrition, tobacco, certain systemic diseases, etc.), the periodontal tissues are at risk of being attacked by bacteria found in dental plaque and tartar. This will first lead to an inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis. Fortunately, this is reversible if the patient gets the right care in time and maintains good hygiene habits afterwards. However, if proper care is not taken, the inflammation will
progressively spread to the other tissues of the periodontium: this is periodontitis. The latter will lead to an irreversible loss of the tissues that support the teeth. If the disease progresses and is not treated, the teeth will start to move and, in the worst cases, may fall out.

Depending on the stage of your gum or periodontal problem, our general dentist may suggest a variety of treatments, including a dental curettage to remove the bacteria and tartar that have accumulated under the gums. In cases of more advanced periodontitis, a gum graft may be indicated to give sufficient support to the affected teeth.

Gingivitis & Periodontitis :
signs to watch out for

When it comes to gingivitis and periodontitis, it is important to know how to recognize their signs and symptoms so that you can quickly consult your dentist to obtain

the right care. This will help slow down the progression of the disease.

It is also important to know that these risk factors are associated with periodontitis because of their impact on the effectiveness of the immune system, which fights bacteria in the mouth:
taking certain medications, stress, poor diet, smoking, immunosuppressive diseases…

Always watch for the following signs so you can react quickly if in doubt :

Gingivitis

  • Redness and slight swelling of the gums at the base of the teeth ;
  • Bleeding when brushing and flossing ;
  • Sensitivity of the gums.

Periodontitis

  • The symptoms mentioned above, but also… ;
  •  Retraction of the gums (the teeth seem longer) ;
  •  The formation of periodontal pockets (spaces between the roots of the teeth and
    the gums);
  •  Dental pain ;
  •  Teeth that loosen and become mobile ;
  •  Persistent bad breath.
